<video:title>Dolphins, Whangaparapara, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Dolphins are frequent visitors to Great Barrier Island.
This video was shot at Whangaparapara Harbour where the dolphins could be seen swimming up and down the bay for a good portion of the day.
The waters around Great Barrier Island are used year-round by large groups of bottlenose & common dolphins.

<video:title>Dolphins, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, 720x1280 w/audio</video:title>

<video:title>Kaitoke Beach, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Kaitoke Beach is a long sandy bay stretching from the Sugar Loaf headlands at the southern end to the Kaitoke Stream and Swamp in the north.

Another popular surf spot with consistent surf all year round. Left and right hand waves, rarely crowded. Beware of rips & sharks.

The Aotea Board Riders Club regularly have comps here depending on the conditions.

As with most of the east coast beaches on Great Barrier Island it is an important nesting ground for the endangered Brown Teal and Dotterel.

<video:title>Medlands Beach, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Medlands Beach, Oruawharo Bay is the closest surf beach to Tryphena.

It is separated from Kaitoke Beach by the Sugar Loaf headlands at the northern end.

It has a fairly exposed beach break and offers reliable surf conditions at almost any time of the year. Good quality left and right hand waves and generally not a crowded beach.

At the southern end there is a Department Of Conservation Campsite (Oruawharo Creek Recreation Reserve) and vehicle access to the beach for boat launching.

As with most of the east coast beaches on Great Barrier Island it is an important nesting ground for the endangered Brown Teal and Dotterel.</video:description>

<video:title>Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Port Fitzroy has long been a favourite destination for yachties as it offers shelter in almost all weather conditions.

Kaikoura Island, a nature reserve, guards the entrance to both Port Fitzroy and Port Abercrombie.

Aquaculture is prevalent in these sheltered waters and the popular Great Barrier Island Mussellfest is a yearly event.

<video:title>Tryphena, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Tryphena Bay takes its name from the brig "Tryphena" which made several visits to Great Barrier Island between 1841 and 1845.

Before this it was known by the early European settlers as Port Tofino.

In earlier times it was the site of a Māori pa (fortified village).

Tryphena is one of the main population areas on Great Barrier Island with safe swimming beaches, great fishing and some spectacular sunsets.

<video:title>Tupuwai Point, Whangapoua, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Tupuwai Point is the end point of the Wairarapa Graves Walkway.

In one of the worst shipwrecks in New Zealand's maritime history, about 140 people drowned when the SS Wairarapa hit rocks near Miners Head on 29 October 1894.

Most of the dead from the shipwreck were taken back to Auckland. But some remain buried on the island in two small cemeteries one of which can be found at Tupuwai Point.

<video:description>Whangaparapara was in industrial centre on Great Barrier Island for mining, timber milling and whaling.

Gold and silver were discovered in the late 1800's. The Oreville stamping (ore crushing) battery is still a prominent landmark on the Whangaparapara Road...

<video:title>Whangapoua Beach, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand</video:title>
<video:description>Whangapoua Beach is on the east coast of Great Barrier Island.

It is a popular surf spot and also an important conservation area.

At the head of the Whangapoua Estuary is the settlement of Okiwi which has a small airfield, from the beach Rakitu Island is clearly visible.

A Department Of Conservation Campsite is located on the edge of the estuary.

A grave site at Tapuwai Point marks the final resting place for some of those drowned when the SS Wairarapa ran aground at Miners Head on October 24 1894, New Zealands worst maritime disaster.

The Wairairapa Graves Walkway takes you to Tupuwai Point where the grave site is located.
